Private Herbert Lyle Armstrong lived at 10 Park Ave, Oneida, NY. DOB: November 11,1888. DOD: September 30, 1918. KIA: France, age 29. Burial Rome Cemetery, B (Section J) Oneida County, Rome, NY. Herbert was inducted into the Army at Wampsville, NY on February 22, 1918. He was a US Army Private leaving for Camp Devens on February 23, 1918. He was later transferred on May 1, 1918 to Camp Mills assigned to Company E of the 59th Infantry, 4th Division. On May 4, 1918 he went overseas, upon arrival he was given charge of a squad in the intelligence section of his battalion. In his line of work he had charge of listening posts in the front line trenches, patrol duty and sniping. Herbert served in the Aisne-Marne offensive from July 18 through August 6, 1918, Vesle sector from August 7 through August 12, 1918, Toulon Sector September 6, through September 13,1918, St. Mihiel offensive September 14, 1918, then Meuse-Argone offensive September 26, 1918 until the time of his death on September 30, 1918. Herbert was born in Rome, NY, youngest son of Nancy S. and Jonas W. Armstrong. After school he worked at the Rome Wire Company, later moving to Oneida where he lived on Park Ave. Herbert was single, worked as a foreman at Burt Olney Canning Company in Oneida and as a travelling salesman. He later became a bookkeeper before he went off to war. Herbert was survived by his mother Nancy, brothers Arthur T of Philadelphia, Walter J of Washington DC and the Honorable Perry M of New York City.
